Difference /Library and /System/Library

What is the functional difference between putting stuff into
/Library/
/System/Library/
? For example, if I put a font in /Library/Fonts, alternatively in
/System/Library/Fonts/, is there a difference in accessibility from
different programs?

AFAIK, there is no practical difference to OS 10. It should find fonts
wherever they are put. IIRC, the System/Library/Fonts folder is for fonts
that the system requires to run, and so the fonts in this folder are better
left there as a core set, while the Library/Fonts folder would be where you
could put additional fonts that you might want to add to your font library,
or delete at a later date, without removing one critical to OS 10's well
being.

As a side note, if you have a dual boot machine, you would not want to
disturb the fonts in the OS 9 fonts folder. Certain core fonts are required
for OS 9 to run, and if you were to move them somewhere else, OS 9 would let
you know.
