| Can't access an Apple PB from within Windows... HELP!!! :-( Hi there, everyone! I recently encountered a weird error when trying to add an Apple PowerBook G4 to a Canon copier's list of computers. The copier is in a Mac-only network, and all Apple computers are running either 10.3.8 or 10.3.9. All Mac clients are added to the copier via SMB, and everything's been working just fine. I had to re-deploy a PowerBook G4 computer for a new user, so I thought I'd test it to make sure it worked fine. Everything worked properly until I tried to scan a file from the Canon copier to the computer. I know this worked before because there were still some scanned PDF documents in the designated folder. When I tried to scan to the computer this time, however, the copier kept reporting a "no response" error. I rebooted both the computer and the copier, but this had no effect on the problem. I then decided to delete the account for the PowerBook G4 on the copier and recreate it again from scratch. Using the copier's network browser utility, I browsed the workgroup and found the PowerBook G4 in the list of available computers. Double-clicking the PowerBook in the list brought up the usual prompt for the user and password. When I entered the information, however, I got an error indicating that either the destination, user, and/or password information entered was incorrect. I double-checked to ensure that the user and password were entered correctly, and I made sure that the PowerBook G4's workgroup information was the same as the workgroup entered on the copier, and every other Mac computer, too. Having verified this, I went ahead and rebuilt permissions on the PowerBook G4. Some minor errors were found and corrected, but this also failed to resolve the problem. At this point, I decided to install a clean System (Mac OS 10.3.9) on an external firewire hard drive, recreating the PowerBook G4's user account information exactly on the new System. I then booted the PowerBook G4 from the external firewire hard drive with the new System and attempted to access the PowerBook G4 from the copier. This time, the user and password information were accepted, and I was able to add the computer to the copier and scan to it like I was able to do before today. Since I now knew the copier and network were all functioning properly, I decided to try and get some additional information about the problem by trying to access the PowerBook G4 from my notebook PC (Win XP Pro SP2). I began by first browsing and connecting to all the other available Mac clients that had Windows Sharing enabled. No problems there - I was able to connect to and access all the Mac clients I found. Finding the PowerBook G4 in the list of computers in the workgroup, I tried to access it. Once again, I was prompted to enter my user and password information. When I did, I got the following error: " \\Computer name is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network name cannot be found." Oddly, if I purposely enter the password incorrectly, the login screen reappears with the computer name entered in front of the user, i.e. \\computer-name\username. When I enter the password correctly, however, I get the same "not accessible" error. It's worth mentioning, though, that I can access this PowerBook G4 via Personal File Sharing and using the same user and password information that fails in Windows Sharing. I suspect the Windows Sharing preferences on the PowerBook G4's System may have become corrupted, but I can't find the appropriate preference file(s) to delete to restore default and (hopefully) proper functioning. I may be wrong in underestimating the scope of the problem. Although this seems to be an isolated incident, I'm concerned by the fact that I have no explanation and/or recourse for why this happened. I'd hate to have to reinstall and reconfigure any other Mac workstation that may eventually exhibit this problem. If anyone has any idea and/or suggestions about the problem I just described, please email me back asap. I appreciate any assistance I can get on this matter. Thanks in advance! Sincerely, Pietro Siciliano |

If I were in your place, I would try an overall disk utilities program such as DiskWarrior, and also some of the specialty utilities programs that clean preferences and cache files such as Preferential Treatment, and Cache X.
