| OSX 10.3.9 Questions Hello: I'm a long-time Mac user, but a recent migrant from 9.2.2 to 10.3.9, so please bear with me... Please answer these questions for me, if you can: 1--In the Finder, when I go to "Shut Down...", I have to choose it twice before it actually begins to shut down the machine. The second time, I get some blurb about the machine automatically shutting itself down in so-and-so amount of seconds. Why can't I just choose "Shut Down..." and have the **** thing actually SHUT DOWN? Why do I have to do it twice? Is there some setting somewhere that I need to re-set? 2--I have an Imation SuperDisk drive, and an Iomega 100mb Zip Drive hooked up to this Mac Mini--both are USB, and both are hooked up through a 7-port Belkin USB hub. The Operating System will fail to recognize the Iomega Zip Drive 100% of the time, even though I have downloaded the most recent drivers. And about 50% of the time, it will fail to recognize the Imation SuperDisk drive, especially if I eject one disk and insert another. Usually, the only way I can get it to recognize the new disk is to restart the machine. Can anyone shed any light on why this is happening and what I need to do to fix the problem? I have hooked both drives directly to the Mac Mini, bypassing the hub, but seems to not help a single bit. I welcome any input, and thank you in advance for your assistance! --Guy Thurston, OR |

Take it back to the store, take your two peripherals with you, and if they can be plugged into any other mac and be seen, but not yours, the problem is the machine itself. One might try reinstalling the software (the os) first, though. Hope that helps. ej |

What applications do you have running at the time ? It's very possible that shutdown is waiting for a process to finish cleanly, and by selecting shutdown again you're forcing the process to exit immediately. I'm guessing that the shutdown option on the apple menu calls the unix shutdown(1) command - you could try opening a Terminal, typing : sudo -s [your password when prompted] shutdown -h now .... and see if it gives you any clues ?
