Transferring from PC to Mac - help!

Hello, I have an LC 580 that does not have any form of Internet access. I'd
like to download Mac files on my PC and transfer them onto my Mac. Could
someone please tell me the easiest (and cheapest!) way of doing this??
Thanks!

If your PC has a CD burner, download the files, burn them onto a CD and
copy them to the Mac. The files will lose their creator bit in the
process, but if they are compressed files, you can drop them onto
Stuffit.

Do you have a cd burner or a zip drive or an external hard drive?

Even if he has some of these, it may not be very useful... for example,
a parallel port zip drive won't connect to the Mac, or a USB external
hard drive won't work with the LC 580.

While a CD burner may be usable, so far no one has suggested the humble
floppy drive... virtually all PCs have one, as does an LC 580... and
assuming the Mac has the Apple File Exchange (aka PC Exchange) extension
loaded, the Mac can read PC-formatted high density floppies.

I have a CD burner. I've putting files on a 3 1/4 disk, with no luck. They
were HQX and SIT files, both containing Mac programs. When I tried to
unstuff the files on my Mac, it wouldn't open the SIT file, and the HQX file
just opened to reveal a SIT file... *grumble*

I'll try the CD burner thing though, and get back to you all!

You don't have a CD-Rom drive in the LC do you? I looked up the specs for
it and I didn't see one. You don't have any ethernet connection on it
either, that I saw. You've got a DB25 SCSI connector on the back of your
mac. I suppose you could get an external CD-Rom drive that is SCSI. You
could then take advantiage of what the other people have suggested here.

You could also use the serial port to transfer the files computer to
computer. You could use the following site as a guide.

That's probably the cheapest and easiest way - if the OP's PC has a
burner. Otherwise, Dr Tom could try using a seriel nul-modem cable. And
use MS-DOS Kermit on the PC as a server and say Z-Term on the Mac to
connect to the PC.

You have to format the disk for mac to transfer the files; you format
floppies to pc in the other direction.

Try draging the sit-files onto the Stuffit ikon. Try using Compact Pro
with the hqf-files.

depending on the original file - uncompressing an hqx file - CAN (and
often does) create a '.sit' file.

also - you should NOT expect to double click on a file transported
through a PC (sit or hqx, or any other for that matter) to open by
double clicking. The information the Mac expects (creator and file
type) are kept in meta data - a resource fork - which usually does NOT
transfer through a PC since it (the PC) does not support the concept.

to get the file to open, you will need to open the application you want
to use (or expect, should work) in this case stuffit or stuffit expander
then select 'open' from the file menu and navigate to the file9s) yo
want to open.

When you say "it wouldn't open the SIT file..." what exactly are you
describing?

When you transfer a file from a PC to a Mac, it lacks the Mac 'resource
fork'-- which is the part of the file with the icon and the creator
information.

As a result, if you double-click on the file, the Mac usually doesn't
know what to do with it.

However, if you open an application that ought to be able to read such
files (in this case, Stuffit Expander), and use the File/Open menu (or
alternatively, drag and drop the data file's icon on top of the
application's icon), it usually is able to open it.

That SHOULD work with your SIT files.

Not true:

1) PCs lack the ability to format disks for Macs unless 3rd party
software (I use DataViz's MacOpener) is installed

2) As I stated above, Macs have the ability (via Apple's PC Exchange
extension) to read PC-formatted high density floppies (and other disks
as well).

You might want to consider a completely different tack. You can use PPP
server software to turn your PC into the equivalent of a dialup ISP, and
connect your Mac to it using the serial port.
