Opening applications folder blanks-out finder

I am operating OsX on a Mac G4. When I open the applications folder,
all desktop icons disappear. Can still access applications in dock, but
all applications kept in the applications folder just disappear.

BUT, then they all pop back up after a second or so. I can then use
anything on the desktop, but applications folder still disappears if I
click on anything in it.

Also, the computer will not recognize my iPod (3rd generation).
Internet use has not been affected.

This all began immediately after I downloaded several MP3's from a
citrusy download site.

Can anyone help me to correct this? Thanks so much!!!

James
