Mac training for complete newbie.

I have been asked by a friend for recommendations for someone who can
provide basic training in using computers generally, Macs in particular and
Photoshop.

Background - he has never used computers before and has invested in a Mac
G5, scanner, printer and Photoshop. He is/has been a professional
photographer but not for a few years and is interested in using the machine
with his extensive photographic collection. He lives in Kent, UK and I live
in Scotland so am not able to provide assistance personally.

Can anyone suggest a trainer based in Kent or south-east able to provide
one-to-one training?

Many thanks.

Check Apple's web site for an Apple store or Apple reseller in your
friend's area. Any store that sells Apple computers will be able to
refer your friend to someone who can do training and many Apple stores
also offer free or low-priced training workshops.

There may be a Mac user group in your area. This can be an excellent
source of people who can help. An Apple store or Mac reseller in your
area may know of such a group.

Some other info sources:

The Help file on the Mac. This is actually fairly useful. Check this out
by going to Help in the top menu bar. The particular Help file you get
depends on which is the active (top-level) application at the time. If
the Finder is active, you will get help about the Mac and Mac OS itself.
If another application, such as Photoshop, is active, you will get the
help file for that application.

There are various books about the Mac OS, Photoshop, etc. You can find
these books at computer stores, book stores, and on line. David Pogue's
book <<Mac OS X, the Missing Manual>> is good for the Mac OS, as are
others.

Photoshop is a widely used professional application for which there is
lots of literature, training classes, etc. There may be an on-screen
manual on the Photoshop install CD.

The scanner should have come with instruction literature, either in
printed form or on the software CD.

An extensive list of local Mac User Groups is available on Apple's web
site.
