| Apple Airport Questions All, I am seriously considering buying one of the Airport products and have a couple of questions. Airport Extreme Question: I have a Mac G5 desktop and two Powerbooks. Clearly the Powerbooks will go the wireless route. My question is around how to include the G5 desktop. I am not sure how to get it included in the network. The obvious way would be to put a wireless card in it, but this would cost additional money. Is there some way that I can continue to access the G5 desktop via a cable? Airport Express Question: 1) Same question as above Airport Extreme v. Airport Express: For my simple 3 Mac situation would you recommend going with Airport Extreme or Airport Express. Thanks for the help. |

The Airport Extreme base station has 2 ethernet ports. A WLAN port for connecting to your Cable or DSL modem, and a LAN port that you can either connect directly to your G5, or attach a 10/100baseT switch giving you additional ethernet ports for direct wiring additional systems should you wish (I have a 5 port 10/100baseT switch plugged into my Airport extreme base station, and then a B&W G3/400 and a PC plugged into the switch). You could also consider a 3rd party 802.11g WiFi Cable/DSL router which typically includes several additional 10/100baseT switched LAN ports (http://dealmac.com). > Airport Express Question: 1) Same question as above The Airport Express has only 1 ethernet port. This port would be plugged into your Cable or DSL modem. That would only allow you to attach your G5 via WiFi, thus requiring you to buy an Airport extreme card for the G5. I also have an Airport Express, but I use it to extend my wireless network to give me getter coverage though out my house, including the back porch. But for your needs, you want a WLAN port and at least 1 (or more) LAN ports. > Airport Extreme v. Either the Airport Extreme or a 3rd party 802.11g WiFi Cable/DSL router. > Thanks for the help. Bob Harris |
