| Usenet Moderation Tools-Programs? Any moderation tools or applications for Usenet available for Mac OS 9? I may be asked to assist moderating a Usenet newsroup but cannot seem to locate any Macoriented programs for this task. Thanks |

To me, Usenet == news. There are many news readers out there although for MacOS 9, you have fewer and most are unsupported. I used MT-Newswatcher (still do on MacOS X). Netscape 7 also had a newsgroup module. If these don't suit your needs, you'd be better off upgrading to MacOS X or using another platform entirely to perform this function. -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... |

He didn't ask for newsreaders, he asked for *moderation tools*. Software for newsgroup moderators. In moderated newsgroups, all the messages go to the group's moderator for approval before being posted on the newsgroup. The moderator can block spam, trolls, and other messages that violate the rules for that newsgroup. It's supposedly possible to do newsgroup moderation with just a newsreader and an email program, but good tools can make it a lot easier, and can even automatically approve or reject messages that match certain criteria. |

Never heard of this sort of specialized application. What would you use if you could run it on any platform? Is there a UNIX tool that does this or a module for emacs that would serve? If so, those might be ported to MacOS X. As to something on MacOS 9, I've doubts. But who knows, I could be wrong. -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... |

I moderate a newsgroup. I don't do it on a Mac but instead on a VMS system. All messages are sent to me via an email for approval. Messages contain all of the original poster's header information. If I approve the message, all that is needed is the insertion of the "Approved" header. I do this with a bit simple command procedure (a script for you unix folks) and pass it off to my news posting software. Unless your news provider/software will allow you to pass the original header data, you might be out of luck as it will look as though you are posting all messages. -- VAXman- A Bored Certified VMS Kernel Mode Hacker VAXman(at)TMESIS(dot)COM "Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?" |

| Re: Usenet Moderation Tools-Programs? Did you find tools for non-OS 9- Macs? If you wouldn't mind listing a few, it'd be easier to Google a little and find out. I did track down a decent FAQish doc for moderators: http://www.landfield.com/usenet/mode...ok/modtoc.html Not sure if that'd be helpful. If you can dig up a tool in Java, you can often get that ported to OS 9- with a minimum of effort, depending. This should be a pretty simple set of I/O ops, so that's probably the easiest route to go if you need a tool and can't find one on Classic. Ruffin Bailey |

I visited Kent's site but was only able to turn up tools for Windows (limited) and a few for people connected to Unix systems with command line access or with certain scripts. I also sent Kent a message bit it has not been replied to as yet. DMK |

He has not been seen for some time. Anyone have any idea what happend to him? He was very involved in Usenet FAQ archiving and helping FAQ holders. DMK |
