| New to Mac - change computer name? Ok, so I made the switch. A friend gave me his iBook G3 and I'm still try to get comfortable with OS X. So far, I'm pleased but of course, the questions are popping up. I haven't used an Apple operating system since GS/OS 6.01. First, how do I change the computer Owner's Name? Currently "Brian's Computer" shows up all over the place and I can't seem to find a way to change this. Will I have to reinstall OS X? Second, can someone recommend a good offline newsreader for OS X? I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions. Please let me know if I've posted in the wrong place. Thanks, Mike maginnis@tarnover.org |

Open up System Preferences, go to the Sharing panel, and you can change the name there. -- Quando omni flunkus moritati Visit the Buffy Body Count at <http://homepage.mac.com/dsample/> |

System Preferences -> Sharing > Second, can someone recommend a good offline newsreader for OS X? Check out MacOrchard.com. You can find a lot of news readers (including offline ones) as well as other interesting Mac networking utilities. I've seen MacSOUP a lot of times, but have not personally used it. Also versiontracker.com/macosx as a source for most downloads. And for off beat ways to do things, MacOSXHints.com is a great resource. > I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions. At least go to a book store and browse a copy to see if it might be useful to you, along with any of the other Mac OS X books in your local bookstore. > Thanks, Your welcome. I recently discovered that I can use my iMac G4 as a server for my IIgs and store the entirety of available Apple II software from all of the major archive sites in a relatively small area of the hard disk. Its nice to have all of the software all of the time... > First, how do I change the computer Owner's Name? You should be able to just change the computer name under System Preferences/Sharing. However, if you are using a router for DHCP service you should also check the DHCP Client ID under System Preferences/Network/TCP-IP > Second, can someone recommend a good offline newsreader for OS X? I'm experimenting with Mozilla Thunderbird (a sibling of Firefox) for reading email and news. It is promising, but I haven't enough experience with it to recommend it yet. If you decide to try it--please note that it is free--you can get it here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/ > I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions. It explains how to do things like export/import your email from a PC in a very straightforward way. - Mike |
