MAC wont finish booting to OSX

Help! And thanks in advance!

I have a MAC G4 Server:

500Mhz G4
256Mb RAM
Model M5183
DVD ROM
AGP - ATI Video Card
ATTO Scsi
3 x 20Gb Hard Drives

The box was working fine with OSX 10.1 until I tried to upgrade to OSX
10.3. The install seemed to go fine, but when I rebooted the mouse
whirly just goes on forever. I can reboot with the C option to boot off
the OSX Install CD just fine, and I can re-installl as many times as I
want. I've even run the Disk Utility and re-formatted and
re-partitioned several times. I've also tried going back top OSX 10.1.
I have also removed the SCSI controller, installed an IDE drive with
OSX, and tried booted off that: no luck.

Nothing works at this point.

Any hints or suggestions?

Best,

Steve

What kind of install CD did you use? One that shipped with a new Mac, or
the generic install CD sold by itself?

The kind that is a copy from a friend. I assume it came with his G4.

I bet that's the problem. OS X install CDs that ship with new Macs are
hardware-specific and, unless you're really really lucky, will only work
with the hardware with which it was shipped. You'll have to buy the
non-hardware-specific OS X install CD and licence that is sold by itself.

K.

Crap! That ruins my plan of buying a new Mac when Tiger (OS10.4) comes
out and also installing that system on this old iMac (G3) that I'm
running 10.3 on.
