SilverKeeper, freeware from LaCie.

Another alternative is "Carbon Copy Cloner". I use it daily, without
error. YMMV. Available from: <http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html>

I should point out that whether you use CCC or SilverKeeper, neither
in my experience backs up folders protected by FileVault, _if_ the user
using FileVault is logged in. So, if you use FileVault, setup a
second administrative user, and perform your backup as that user, while
you are logged out of your primary account.

A guy I met in the Stanford Bookstore spoke very favorably of
SuperDuper.

Haven't tried it yet myself, but didn't buy the upgraded version of
Retrospect I was looking at either.

have used just about everything except retrospect. SuperDuper! has been
the best most consisyently trouble-free.

Perhaps. When it works...

I bought the latest (v.6.0) of Retrospect, after the Retrospect Express
version that came with my Maxtor HDs didn't work.

My experiences were - not good. Retrospect - usually - backs up external
Firewire disks (on a desktop G4 running 10.3.7) but has consistently failed
to backup my boot disk. Yes, I fixed permission, ran DiskWarrior - the
works. It still goes into beachball mode when attempting to backup the boot
drive.

Retrospect help? They told me to uninstall and reinstall... but it wouldn't
fully uninstall, and, after eventually I force quitted, the Mac wouldn't
boot AT ALL. I had to reinstall OSX to get it working!!

And then, when, greatly daring, I reinstalled Retrospect - the ****
application STILL wouldn't backup my boot disk. (And, only this morning, it
failed on one of the external FireWire ones, too!)

YMMV - but in my experience, Retrospect sucks. Bigtime.

- duncan

(CarbonCopy Cloner works flawlessly, incidentally!)
