Never had any problem with any of mine. Except to lose them, which is the
most likely end of life scenario.

Never had any trouble with them, except on a Mac. Pulled one out
without dismounting it, and now it's dead, unusable, unrepairable,
apparently.

I had exactly the same thing happen to one I used on a Windows XP system
that hibernated at an inconvenient moment. It still shows up as a
removable drive when I plug it in now, but with no 'disk' inserted. It's
acting a lot like a hard disk with no partitions defined.

Have you looked at it in Drive Management?

I messed one up the same way but it was fine after I reformatted it.
Failure to dismount it probably corrupted the volume information.

I think you are probably correct about the cause. But I've been unable
to format the drive on any system since, even using more advanced disk
tools.
