| Importing Non-Digital Music Last October someone responded to someone else who wanted to take music off cassette tapes and convert the audio to MP3 (or some other digital) format. The responding person outlined a procedure that used iMovie to digitize the audio signal, then export the result in a format that iTunes can accept. The procedure works, but I have one question. Is there a method of monitoring (listening to, that is) the sound in iMovie, while iMovie is recording it? So far the best I could do is to watch the input level display carefully, and wait for it to drop to zero. This is not very convenient (or foolproof), to say the least. I would appreciate suggestions from anybody who knows how to do this. Thanks, Matthew Lybanon |

Other applications are available for sound recording that give more control than iMovie. iMovie, as the name implies, is really for movies, and does sound as an adjunct. I use Amadeus II to control sound recording and then to edit the resulting digital sound file. Works great, gives a lot of capability. It is shareware, with a modest shareware fee. The software is by Martin Hairer. See http://www.hairersoft.com/Welcome.html By the way, the computer hardware does the digitizing -- internal hardware in a Mac that has an audio in port, or external hardware, such as Griffin iMic, in a Mac that does not have an audio in port. The Griffin iMic comes with some software on a CD, that includes software for controlling recording and doing sound editing. Garageband also provides features for controlling sound recording.
