Your using OS9??? in any event you may need to rebuild the desktop, zap
the Pram etc. On the downside I got bombs before my very first Mac HD
died,...you may consider backing up important files before zapping or
rebuilding. Worse case aside from a HD failure you may need to reinstall
the OS as it could be corrupt.

Realistically how many apps do you run at a time? I used to set the
memory to 2x or 2.5 x the suggested allocation. OS 9xxx and below
partion ram and don't reallocate when you close the app so you really
almost have to reboot after intense work like graphics. This is why I
love OSX on my G4, those issues now non exist,...and I almost hate
classic.

Aside from one program I never boot to classic and would deinstall it
if I did not require that app. I Never use(d)VM, nothing beats lots of
ram.

Is all the ram rated for the same speed?

I don't know how your processor speed effects the VM use but I use 512mb
of ram and no VM in OSX on a G4 PB 550mhz, Photoshop CS works much
better in OSX than PS7 ever did on 9.2.2 I typically am creating 100mb
image files. Some times retouching is a little slow but OSX sure beats
rebooting all the time.

You could buy a second computer used, one that old should be fairly
reasonable I know my PB is getting long in the tooth,...I lust for a G5
though and a wide screen :-) Hope I have helped.
