| DVD burning on a G3 I like LaCie's internal DVD burner (even comes with OS9 software), but they claim it requires a G4. I'm wondering if they're just covering their ass regarding video performance, or if it really does need one. I just want to write CDs and data DVDs on my old G3/266. Think it'll work? Michael |

And, I'd still have the same question... Michael |

You can probably use it at 1x speed and maybe a little higher. How fast is the internal drive you mentioned? 4x? 8x? I doubt that a G3/266 can keep up at 8x. - Mike |

Playing back a DVD is a problem because the video stream requires a lot of processing power to decode. If you have a Video card that does it like the newer ATI 9200PCI, even that's no problem. The problems of an internal DVD-R have to do with the Beige s ROM searching for a particular identification string from the CD Drive. Otherwise it won't boot or in many cases load drivers for it. This has nothing to do with speed or the hardware architecture. It was Apple trying to force you to buy apple approved parts by sabatoging the Apple ROMs. Simular tacticts are use to make sure Final Cut and iMovie only work with the "right" drives. |
