New to OSX

This is my first posting so please bare with me. I have downloaded a beta
version of osx. This is for a friend who only has a dialup connection.
Unfortuneately he dosn't have a CD burner an his IMAC only a CD rom. The
Problem is the download is in dmg format . Although I have a CD burner I
don't have a Mac of any description as I use Windows XP and Solaris. So
my question is, are the any pieces of software I can use to open the dmg
on non Mac machines.

I seriously doubt you downloaded a beta version of OS X. Opening the dmg
on a non-windows machine makes no sense? You can burn the dmg to a CD as
it is and give it to your friend, but like I said, I doubt its a beta
OS X, unless its the Public Beta which is not worth downloading.

First, I don't know what a "beta version" of OS X is. OS X is commercial
software that is available for purchase. It can be purchased on CD
direct from Apple or from an Apple-authorized reseller. The current
shipping version in OS X 1.3, code-named "Panther."

OS X also comes bundled with any new Macs.

If your friend wants to use OS X, he should buy OS X on CD from a
legitimate source. The price is around $100.

Second, on the more general question of decompressing .dmg files or
other compressed Mac applications programs on a Windows PC: Don't do it.
Mac application programs contain two forks, a data fork and a resource
fork. The DOS file system of a Windows computer can not handle
two-forked files. If you try decompress a compressed Mac application
program on a Windows computer, the two forks will be separated and the
file effectively destroyed as a useful Mac application program.

This second concern does not apply to pure data files, such as Microsoft
Word documents, jpeg files, etc. These pure data files can go
cross-platform quite happily. The same is not true for application
program files, however.

What do you hope to do with OSX on a (non-Mac) PC?

This would be rather surprising.

Apple doesn't give out free betas of their system softwrae. The only
legitimate betas of 10.4 are those CDs that were given out at this
year's Worldwide Developer Conference, or downloads that are only
available to paid-up members of the Apple Developer's Network.

A DMG is only useful to a computer running MacOS.

If your friend has a legal right to that download (meaning he paid
the $$$ for an appropriate ADC membership) then he can afford to buy
a USB or FW CD-RW drive. If this is an illegal download, then I have
no sympathy.
