trouble emptying the trash

have a file which I cannot remove from the trash. I have tried every
freeware trash empty program I can find - they all report they are
eraseing the file, but when I open the trash, it is still there. When I
re-run the program, it again reports it is emptying the trash.

I have tried the terminal, Norton Disk Doctor, and Tech Tool Pro with
no more success.

My eMac will not but into OS 9. It has been suggested that I boot from
an OS X CD and try to empty the trash while that system is active. The
only OS X CDs I have are NDD, TTP, and the various CDs that came with
the computer - they won't allow any "free lance" emptying.

Does anybody have any other ideas?

What is the file?

Why are you running under OS 9 and not OS X?

You may not have the right privileges to delete it if it is a system file.
Try opening a terminal window, then type:

ls -alt filename Unix command to observe the permissions for the filename
chmod 777 filename Unix command to unlock the file so it can be deleted
ls -alt filename Observe the permissions again

If the permissions have not changed, then you may not have the proper
credentials to delete it. If it has changed, then...

rm filename

....should delete the file

If it doesn't work, then you may have to authenticate and then delete the
file. Use the Unix command sudo to get root privileges:

sudo chmod 777 filename

Also, OS X won't allow you to eliminate the file if it is in use. If the
above does not work, then try restarting and then deleting it.

If you have any problems, then please post your results to the above
commands to this thread.
