help - networking PC and Mac

Please help a newbie recently converted to the Mac world.

I'm simply trying to get both my PC and Mac Laptop to share the same
broadband connection.

Details;
PC - win2k
Powerbook G4, running OSX.3.5 (pretty much brand new)

Used to have both computers sharing the same internet connection with my DSL
service (Bell Sympatico) with this setup.
modem, hub (linksys, 10/100, NH1005, 5 port hub) then one direct to my PC
and another to my airport express and wirelessly to my laptop. This worked
fine - so I know each computer is physically capable of having this work.

Then I had to switch to cable broadband (Rogers) and I can't get them to
work together. Through questioning people I feel that it has to do with the
fact that Rogers uses dynamic IP while Sympatico did not. (??)

I can get one of the two to work, but never both. Basically if I reset the
modem (turn it off, then on [releasing the ip?]) the first computer I turn
on will have access to the internet (the PC automatically, for the Mac I
also reset the airport express [pushing little button with the paperclip],
and have to go through the airport express assistant to set up the network).

Is it possible to do what I want with a HUB? Will a router instantly solve
my problems?

Thanks for any and all help, I know this is possible and that the answer is
out there somewhere!
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Hector,

Rogers is quite different from Sympatico, and actually, I am quite
surprized that it accepts the first one on for internet access as it
really needs a router to function properly - and it has nothing to do
with the Mac or the PC.

But really, since you have an Airport Express, you already have a
router. I'm not too familiar with AE, but it's my understanding that it
can connect directly to your highspeed modem and can feed up to 10
computers.
So, really you need to alter your network setup and pick a cheap
wireless card for your PC.

Good luck and enjoy!

Re: help - networking PC and Mac

You're probably looking for a more specific answer than I can give, but
I wondered what would happen when I added my G5 super-gotcha-hummer to
my Asanti router where I already had my G3 Wall Street notebook
connected to the 'net through a Mororola Cable Modem getting a dynamic
IP number.

I checked first in the documentation for the router and it said to
assign each Mac an internal IP number. Before I did that, however, I
used both computers simultaneously and they both seemed to do just
fine. For instance, I'm checking the weather right now with Safari on
the G5 while downloading this group's message list and reading messages
on the notebook at the same time.

I offer this information to you just for the purposes of perspective.
I'm not a tekkie just a trekkie.

Best wishes.

You are using a hub, so your modem actually sees two unique IP addresses,
one for each computer. My first guess is that having two computers
connected to your modem and sharing a broadband connection probably violates
your terms of service.

The workaround is to replace the hub with a router with Network Address
Translation (NAT) so that your ISP only sees one IP address connected to
your line. I suggest getting a router with an integrated hardware firewall
as well, to better protect your machines.

Take care,

- Mike
