Registering new iMAC

I just bought a new iMac. After setting it up and starting to
register my internet connection fail and so I waited to
register (over the net) and now can't figure out what to
do. This must be one of the dumber questions to this group, but
it should at least be easy to answer. Many thanks, CS.

Re: Registering new iMAC

Why register? Don't worry, your warranty is the same whether you
register or not.

One fewer places for the bad guys to steal your information. Oh, they
say it's protected, but you will likely still get junk mail. I'm extra
carefulfter my experience with a major retailer. One department
assured me that they didn't/don't release anything while another
department sold me down the junk mail river -- I know because I key my
snail mail addy. Fortunately I did not have AOL. You never know when
the minimum-wage computer-savvy janitor or a recently pink-slipped
clerk is doing a midnight download for extra cash.

I've had numerous Macs and bought tons of software. Never registered
any of it. I had a discount card from a software retailer who promised
that the information would be used only to track the buying habits for
internal use only.

After a couple of years the junk mail tap got turned on (I knew because
I key my address, remember?) and I asked them why they released my
information. They said that they had adopted a new policy. It was
just policy, they said, not a law, and a new manager decided it needed
to be changed. They couldn't understand why I would not want to hear
from their "selected marketers" with products my purchases indicated I
might need.

I don't put my address or phone number on my checks, either.
