| Question to Group Regarding Imac 350 Hello everybody, hope this is the right group to post to, am new to macs and not really sure of the groups yet. Anyway my question is this, recently i bought a used imac 550 with OS 9 and 10.2 installed on it when i got it home i upgraded the harddrive to a 80 gig WD from the 15 gig that it came with it, i had written the drive to zero's before i installed the new one into the imac and installed mac OS 10.3 without trouble, after about 15 mins of normal operation i got my first kernel panic, telling me to shut down. Upon researching the problem i read that it may be ram that causes such a thing so replaced the ram with a new 512 stick of 133 pc ram, after that again kernel panic, had tried changing the battery, no luck, upon further research i had realised that the paticular imac i have, no firewire blue, was never even made in a 550 mhz, only a 350 , so then i was thinking that the person who had the machine before had overclocked it and maybe it was overheating, upon reading that the only way to overclock these imacs is to remove the logic board and do some sodering, which is out of my comfort zone when it comes to working on a computer, anyway i took it to a certified mac repair shop and told them the story, they looked at it and and tested it and said there is no evidence of tampering with any of the logic board or proccessor, and that it was definatly a 350. I then did some benchmark tests with Xbench and it is rating about par with a 500 so am a little confused how this can be, I have reset the pram and cudo switch and still no different, does anyone have any idea what could be the trouble or some suggestions on what i could try, sorry to ramble on. Any help would be appreciated, Thank You, Walt. |

I've seen some older Macs go nuts when they had poor power. They weren't quite browned out, but they weren't fully powered. (Perhaps the new drive is taking too much power?) If this is the case, the answer might be to use a UPS with voltage regulation. (Or on the cheap side, take the iMac to a place with good power or try turning off heavy appliances or power-hungry devices in the house, like laser printers, while you test the iMac.) > > Any help would be appreciated, > > Thank You, > > Walt.
