I have a G5 running OS X 10.3.X. I have a serious problem with
overlapped extent files. I saved some of you some time by not asking
what's probably a stupid oft repeated question here and researched it: I
gather it's not directly fixable.

What I want to know is what is the root cause here and how can I prevent
it? My educated guess is that these happened after unexpected shutdowns
from sudden power loss. Any other theories? I've never had serious
disk problems before so I hope it's something preventable (like maybe by
getting an UPS).

My second question is fixing it. Is deleting the offending file and
restoring it from back-ups good enough, or do I have to wipe the hard
drive and do a fully clean install?
