locking files. I sure can't work it out.

Good afternoon,

In our office we keep lots of drawing files on the server. In order to
avoid accidental deletion or alteration, I would like to find a way
that they can be locked. This needs to be achieved remotely, as we
work at two offices (VPN) and the files need to be controlled by
whoever created them, regardless of location. The 'lock' checkbox
works fine on workstations, but can't be used on files on the server.
Is there any way around this?

Any help would be really appreciated.
