Powerbook 17 1.5ghz and the superdrive

I recently purchased a Powerbook 17 1.5ghz, and was wondering what media
works with the optical drive. I do most of my burning from Toast 6, though
will be using iDVD (probably) to produce my DVDs.

I would, however, but interested to know if any other formats (other than
DVD-R) are supported by the drive.

Also, anyone know what kind of media works well in this drive?

Burning CD-R coasters is painful enough - I'd imagine DVDs are much more
expensive and time consuming.

Thanks in advance,

-- Verne

DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW... don't try using DVD+R or +RW discs.

I'm starting to see DVD-R discs in bulk packs of 50 for around $25
CDN... which makes them pretty affordable.

My PB 1.5GHz 15" seems happy enough with DVD+RW disks. All depends on
the drive. The Matsu****as in the new PBs are dual format, and should
support both types of DVDs in Toast at least.

Thanks for the clarification... I wasn't aware that Apple had finally
moved away from the -R only Pioneer product line.

Yeah, well ... surprise.

I was just at Sam's Club and saw 'em for about $23 US/Package of 50.

Neat.

Does the OS allow you to read +R/+RW media?

According to the Panasonic site, it seems that the UJ-825-B (Apple reports
the drive as a UJ-825 and even the pdf describing the drive is named
UJ-825.pdf) indicates the DVD MULTI Drive allows the following to be written:
2x DVD-RAM, 4x DVD-R, 16x CD-R, 8x CD-RW, 2.4x +R, and 2.4x +RW.

Reading appears to be 24x CD-ROM and 8x DVD-ROM.

Next question is: How many of the above will MacOS X allow you to do?

P.S. Boy, sure feels a lot different that the el-cheapo slide out DVD-ROM on
the Pismo :-).
