| iPod difficulties - please help! Hey there - Basically, I'm having problems with my iPod. When I connect it to the computer, it will not appear on the desktop or iTunes, and will only recharge the battery. I have tried different firewire cables, and connecting to another computer, so it has to be a problem with the iPod. Other than that, it functions fine - as in, it will play the music that is already stored on it, despite failing to update. I have tried resetting it by pressing the Menu and Play/Pause buttons; as well as the procedure where you put Hold on then off, press Menu and Play/Pause, then Rewind and Fast Forward - it will simply go to a "OK to disconnect" screen. Does anyone know what I can do to fix it? thanks in advance - Owen o DOT p DOT jones AT btinternet DOT com |

Beauty, it would be better if you could tell us exactly the name of your model. Is it a Nano or an iTouch? What happens when you plug it into the connector to your computer? What kind of computer are you using? There is a reset you can do in iTunes after you hook up your iPod and it should reset everything and resynronize your iPod to your iTunes. The switch is not an on/off switch, but a lock to lock the activity of the controls on the face of the iPod (unless it is an iTouch). You do seem confused as to how an iPod works - basically all your music settings are done in iTunes and when you hook up your iPod to your computer, iTunes will put all those setting into your iPod. If you delete or add anything in iTunes then those settings will also be made to your iPod the next time you hook it up to the computer. -- John Gentile Newsletter editor Rhode Island Apple Group |

You should have a cable that will have one end that plugs into the bottom of your iPod and the other plugs into a USB port on your computer. When the computer detects the iPod is hooked up it should automatically start up iTunes. If you don't understand how to do this, then you need to find an Apple Store or an Apple User group near you. This is what I found on how to restart your iPod when it is frozen: How do I reboot or restart a "frozen" or "hung" iPod? First, check to make sure that the iPod isn't paused or that the "hold switch" is in the "locked position" as indicated by a small "padlock" icon on the screen (if applicable) and color visible on the right side of the "hold switch" (on the top of the iPod). If the iPod isn't paused or locked, you will need to reset your iPod. The steps to reboot or restart your iPod are different depending on the model. For the original iPod, iPod (2G), and iPod (3G) plug the iPod into the power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet (or plug the iPod into a computer), and reset it by depressing the "menu" and "play/pause" simultaneously and continue to hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears. For all models with a "Clickwheel" -- starting with the iPod (4G) and provided by all subsequent models with the exception of the iPod shuffle and iPod touch lines -- plug the iPod to the power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet (or plug the iPod into a computer), and reset it by depressing the "menu" and "select" (the center button) until the Apple logo appears. For additional details on resetting the iPod, please refer to "Resetting iPod" from the Apple Support Site. -- John Gentile Newsletter editor Rhode Island Apple Group |
