MAC OS 8 and AOL 5.0 Problems HELP

I don't know that much about MACs. I'm helping a friend get on the
internet
with a 7200/120 clunker. The computer came with AOL 5.0 installed.
However, when the computer connects to AOL only the AOL GUI and Email
work. I presume that its connecting to the internet otherwise it
wouldn't wouldn't download and display AOL news/info/weather info, but
whenever I try to go to "www.google.com" in the search bar its a
definite no-go. It opens up a window and say, "Cannot connect to..."
And when I open netscape it won't open any websites.

This is completely bizarre. Is it corrupt AOL software? Is there
some network setting that's not right? Some setting in AOL? Like I
said, it is definitely download info from AOL and email works fine.

Please help.

That's not quite correct. A dialup connection to AOL doesn't use the
internet to get there. The AOL connection is a special one, with its own
variety of serial protocol.

You're supposed to be able to access the internet through the AOL
connection, though. I think there's a special system extension that needs
to be present and active in order for that to work. I upgraded my older
MacOS 8 system some years ago, so I can't verify my settings, but you
might check to see if the TCP/IP control panel has a selection for
connecting through "AOL Link".

My suggestion is to run the AOL installer program and hope that it reloads
whatever is missing.

My first suggestion would be to dump aol. My sister has it on osx and all
it is is trouble. I used aol years ago and from what I have seen it is
as much
trouble then as it is now. Even on my old pc it was nothing but trouble.
Check into a local isp. Ask local computer shops who they recomend.
Other than trying to reinstall aol I would update to 8.1 if you can get
a disk.

Thanks. Finding a AOL 5.0 disk may be the most difficult thing.

AOL 5 for the Mac is available on any AOL install disk issued since 5.
Just locate any AOL 9 disk that is being given away. AOL 5 for the
Mac is contained on it. AOL 5 is the last version of AOL that can run
on a classic Mac operating system up through OS 9.2.2.

You may want to use the system's search capability to remove any
vestiges of AOL that is on the machine now prior to installation.

I suspect that the DNS settings are bad which is why you cannot get
out to the web.

I believe trashing the DNS cache in the system folder is one way of
fixing this and allowing it to rebuild. Check with others here first.

Setting the TCP/IP control panel to AOL link is also a must.

After installing AOL 5 you may be confronted with a number of
system-forced downloads each time you log on or off that seek to
update AOL 5 to a certain level. These are art files and program
enhancements. Expect several.
