| Connectivity question Hi guys. Can anyone help me with a connectivity problem? I'm not new to the Mac but I suppose you would have to say I'm new to OS X. If I connect two Macs with an ethernet cable then look for one on the other, I can't find it. I have File sharing turned on, I choose Go/Connect to Server... then I Browse. Nothing. Using 10.34 on both machines. What am I doing wrong? It gets worse. I occasionally need to connect to a PC. Somehow, i have _never_ been successful at this, even back under OS 9. But with X it should be easy, right? Probably I'm making the same silly mistake in both cases. Naturally I've browsed Help extensively. No joy. I'm right about my Ethernet cable, yes? My two G4 Titaniums are smart enough to configure themselves automatically for a straight-through or a cross-over cable. So it's not a cable problem. (Same cable works fine connecting me via a DSL modem to the net). The cable also can't be the problem when trying to connect to a PC because we've tried both crossover and straight-through cables. In the Network/Network Port Configurations set-up, Ethernet is turned on. In the sharing/Services set-up, Personal File Sharing is on. In the Sharing/Firewall section, the firewall is turned on but so is "Allow Personal file Sharing" Thoughts please? |

What am I doing wrong? what netmask are you using? 10.34.1.2 and 10.34.2.2 won't see each other if you have a netmask of 255.255.255.0. You'd have to use 255.255.0.0. > > It gets worse. (assuming your machines are gigabit). If not, they won't do it. > > In the Network/Network Port Configurations set-up, Ethernet is turned > on. Sounds like you've done everything right... have you checked in the Finder? By default, there should be a Network icon in the left-hand pane... and when you double-click it, you should see a list of browseable servers. ======================================= remove 'nospam' from email address before sending, please! Try this, go to GO in Finder and Connect to server. In the server address window type: afp://<Machine Name>.local Where Machine Name is the Computer Name found under Sharing in System Preferences. This should find the other box and let select a user account to share. --jim |

Since you don't have a hub, there are no lights you can look at, but you can check from software. Go to a terminal window on each computer and type "ifconfig en0" and look at the output. It should look something like this: en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULT ICAST> mtu 1500 inet6 fe80::203:93ff:fe77:ab98 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x4 inet 192.168.1.5 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255 ether 00:03:93:77:ab:98 media: autoselect (100baseTX <half-duplex>) status: active supported media: none autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 100baseTX <half-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 1000baseTX <full-duplex> 1000baseTX <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 1000baseTX <full-duplex,flow-control> 1000baseTX <full-duplex,flow-control,hw-loopback> (I've word-wrapped the above to 80 columns. The last few rows are all on one long line). Anyway, note the line that begins with the keyword "media:". Note that the status is "active". If your Ethernet doesn't have carrier, the status will say "inactive". If you don't have carrier, then your cable is bad - try another. I recommend that you use a crossover cable to connect two computers without a hub. Although the ports are supposed to auto-detect the right polarity, auto-detect chipset don't always get it right. - - - If you have carrier, please post the output from running "ifconfig en0" on each of the two machines when they're connected together. This way we'll be able to see how the ports are configured. You might be using address/subnet values that are incomaptible with each other. > It gets worse. I occasionally need to connect to a PC. But right now, I know nothing about your configuration, so it's hard to say what's really going on. > I'm right about my Ethernet cable, yes? They should be smart enough to do the right thing with either straight or crossover cables. But it could be that both cables are bad, which is why I want you to first check to see if you have carrier on the port. > In the Network/Network Port Configurations set-up, Ethernet is > turned on. In the Sharing/Firewall section, the firewall is turned on but > so is "Allow Personal file Sharing" How about your TCP/IP configuration for each computer? Do they both have addresses? In the same subnet? The ifconfig output I requested above should answer these questions. -- David |
