Compatibility between PowerBooks and non-Apple LCDs

Hi folks,

Does anyone have any reports as to whether or not name-brand LCD
monitors, specifically ViewSonic, work with PowerBooks? I've got a
aluminium 12" PowerBook with a DVI port, so do I just need a monitor
with DVI?

Even if it's not an Apple monitor, will it be able to auto-detect the
frequencies it's capable of and everything else?

Thanks,

Chris
