| PPT_PowerPoint files on MAC? I often see .ppt or PowerPoint files on the net, and have downloaded a few. I know nothing about PowerPoint, or whether they can be read without special software. Can they be read on a MAC? I hope so, since thanks to MS marketing, I fear we may see more of this. I just read that some university is going to require all profs to give lectures and seminars in powerpoint, for the sake of uniformity I guess. I argued that there was probably free software available. Anyway, I didn't try AppleWorks, but don't know of any translaters for ppt files. Any comments or suggestions? Van |

PowerPoint 98 Viewer for Macintosh The Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Viewer allows people who use Microsoft PowerPoint to share their presentations with users who do not have PowerPoint. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Van Jacques wrote: > I often see .ppt or PowerPoint files on the net, and > have downloaded a few. However, it will only READ the files ...not edit them. I have had to use it on a PC because the mac software is better, sorry "newer" than the Windows version we have at school. > I just read that some university is going to require all > profs to give lectures and seminars in powerpoint, for > the sake of uniformity I guess. But do you need to create PPT files? If so there will be a cost involved! They can be created in Office for the mac, of course, and there are discounts for educational users. As a bonus, the app is written by the msc unit at MS so it isn't as bad as you would expect. There is also Keynote (our very own Apple app) which, according to the data on the web site, is capable of writing and reading ppts.. Not free, but cheap ($50) is thinkfree office from thinkfree.com You could have a look at openoffice (from openoffice.org) which is free. However at first glance it needs extra stuff to get it to work. None of these come with any recommendations from me - so feel free to use or not ... your choice! Me? Office v.X, but I'm not updating to the latest version ... COST! > > Anyway, I didn't try AppleWorks, but don't know of any > translaters for ppt files. I doubt it. Apple doesn't mention anything other than Word/Excel hth -- M |

Oh, for gawd sake. This mind numbing PPT stupidity has made its way into institutions of higher education. I loathe presentations with PPT. It is difficult, if not impossible, to put technical presentations together that are worth a ****. Unless your presentation is to a group of marketriod *numbnuts* where more than three bullet items per view will cause them great headache, there is nothing of benefit to putting something into PPT. I was asked to make a professional presentation for a group about a year ago. They sent me an email and asked that I provide them with PPT slides before I flew to the destination. I wrote back and said that they asked for a "professional" presentation. :) >I argued that there was probably free software available. > >Anyway, I didn't try AppleWorks, but don't know of any >translaters for ppt files. > >Any comments or suggestions? I have Keynote. It reads in PPT slides. It also seems to have better presentation formats than what I have seen in any of the mind numbing PPT presentations I've been misfortunate enough to have to sit through. -- http://www.ProvN.com for the *best* OpenVMS system security solutions that others only claim to be. -- Cyber-Terrorism (si'-ber tayr'-or-iz-em) n.: The release of, the sale of, or the use of any Micro$oft software product! -- VAXman- A Bored Certified VMS Kernel Mode Hacker VAXman(at)TMESIS(dot)COM |

Appleworks provides excellent capability and flexibility for designing presentations, using a drawing document, but there are no translators that I know of for going between Appleworks drawing and PowerPoint. If you use Appleworks to design a presentation, you would need Appleworks on the machine to make the presentation. Bill |

How about using the Mac version of PowerPoint? You can't legally get the Windows version for free either, so don't complain about the cost. > I just read that some university is going to require all profs to > give lectures and seminars in powerpoint, for the sake of uniformity > I guess. A dumb idea, but universities are full of dumb ideas. Get the Mac version of PowerPoint if this is a requirement you can't get around. -- David |

(http://www.apple.com/keynote/compatibility.html) .... but I don't own it so I can't say how good it is. I just stand by experience - *Powerpoint* isn't compatible with Powerpoint! Just upgrade one of them and watch your transitions fail! |
