| HELP: Bizzare Performa 5260 death ... G'day all ... Have you ever broken one of your children's toys? Yep - that was me this weekend. I made my daughter cry. I somehow scored a box 'o RAM (another story, another time ...). Unfortunately, there was no way of telling which stick was what RAM size (If you've ever played with RAM - you'll know what I mean). So, after 3 hours of swapping, booting and apple system profiling, my daughters Performa 5260 was full - 64 MB! Yay! Next day - booted 3 times, worked fine. 4th time - 'chime of death' on boot. Did everything - pulled out 'new' ram, put in old, hit 'cuda' button (hey - what does 'cuda' stand for anyway?), reset PRAM. Nada. Machine starts up with normal sound, screen draws grey with cursor (that will move until the next bit ...), then the horrible sound. When I pulled out the TV tuner card, one of the brown square boxy components fell off - that could have done some damage? Dunno - wasn't gamme to put it back into any machine ... Happy Ending: Luckily, had old LC 630 body - put Mobo (with 'new' RAM) and HD in - it boots! Did a scrounge for a monitor in the shed - found old apple 14". That indicates nothing wrong with the motherboard, ram or hard disk ... So - what could have happend? Is there anyy way I can salvage the 5260 (I think it looked kind of cool - 90's iMac-ish - and no cluster of cables!). I know it's a 'Road Apple' (see lowendmac.com for details), but she loved it. Any help in getting it working will be appreciated - by myseld and daughter. Thanks in advance mikey mike P.S. Please don't suggest a new machine - a) I like makeing old macs work (typing this on a PowerBook 520c), and 2) my wife won't give me a budget .... married guys know what I mean ... |

If it boots, the system folder on the drive is likely corrupt. -- Brian Ehni |

I once saw an LC 580 do this and it was a corrupt System file. Try the CD boot as suggested and try re-installing the System.
