| iPhoto dies on startup G3 blue and white with 576 MB RAM, OS 10.2.4, lots of room on the hard drive. Used to have a lot of fun with iPhoto, collected pictures from borrowed digital cameras, sent them to friends via MAIL. Ran into some OS problems and had to reinstall some stuff. That's a long story involving an attempt to use CC Cloner to put all my data on a smaller drive so I could give the current one to my son. Cloning always failed and I tried using TT and DW to make it happen but it didn't. So I gave up and now when I try to start iPhoto from the dock, or by attaching a camera, it bounces a few times and dies. I never get a screen with my images. However, on this same machine I can log in as someone else and iPhoto starts right up, downloads images from a camera, does all the stuff it's supposed to do. So it isn't the application that's faulty. There are so many little bits to all these OS X applications I'm not sure where to start, but I can always grab some bits from my other log-in name and move them to my own account. Anyone have any ideas how I could replace the errant bit of iPhoto and still keep the images in my original library? Thanks, J -- Use plasma ray destruct on address when replying directly. |

My guess is that your preferences file is messed up. If it were my machine, I would trash that file. It's found at <your home directory>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist If no one else gives a more satisfying answer, drag the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file to the trash and relaunch iPhoto to see if it works. The program should replace the file, so you'll lose some of the settings you've made, but not any data (photos). jim |

I trashed the prefs and launched iPhoto and it stays launched but I get no window. Tried just dragging parts of the iPhoto stuff stored in my home/pictures/iphoto library directory. There weren't any dark options in the "file" menu when iPhoto was front and center. I can find the images and open them, but they always open in PREVIEW. I'm sure there's something simple here that would reconnect everything. Appreciate your help though, Johnn -- Use plasma ray destruct on address when replying directly. |

The fact that you can open iPhoto from other accounts indicates that it's a problem with your account. Based on this, it doesn't seem appropriate to recommend a reinstallation of iPhoto. On Monday, the gurus will be back online. One of them may have an incantation that you can invoke from Terminal that will solve it all. Have you done a Repair Permissions from Disk Utility? When I'm working on other folk's machines, I do that while I try to think of something worthwhile to do. Sometimes it works. jim |

Login and make sure iphoto works. Then just copy over your files into the new account and setup the various programs you use. (even copy over their preferences directories). That way, you'll have a "clean" user account. Then just delete or compress/archive the old one for a while until you're sure you have everything right. This is allso a good "backup and restore" exercise since you can pretty much practice a recovery and familiarize yourself with what things you need to save and how to recover them. You have plenty of chances to do it over and over until your comfortable you have it right. -- Small Tree Communications 10Gb Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet solutions for your MAC http://www.small-tree.com 1-866-STC-4MAC |

There you'll get an opportunity to create a new account, or navigate to an existing one. For a corrupt file, before anything more drastic, I'd recommend holding down : Cmd-Opt-Shift on launch, and let it try to rebuild the data base. If that doesn't work, I'd create a new user account per the Option command, and then run Import and navigate to the various files where the originals are kept. Don't import the thumbnails. -- John McWilliams |

Could be that I'll have to follow Small Tree's suggestion and start a new account and move everything over to that. Lot of work there considering all the music files, internet preferences, keychain entries, email files and such. I think if I could just get the data from the original photo library moved to my wife's account on this machine (her account has a perfectly normal iPhoto behavior pattern) then I could probably just wait until I decide to move up to Panther or something and that would fix it. This is my only gripe about X. There are so many little parts to everything, so many alias files pointing hither and yon, so many details of permission and ownership that when something goes amiss it's very hard to even restore from a backup and have a functioning set of files. thanks, J -- Use plasma ray destruct on address when replying directly. |

After trying suggestions posted I thought I'd see if there might be some way to reinstall in spite of the fact that the application worked just fine when I logged in as a different user. I noticed that the application (version 1.1.1) was created 7-28-02 and modified 6-4-04. Now back in the old days finding a modified application was a way of finding a corrupted application. So I went to the Apple site and found a download for iPhoto 2, downloaded it, read that it wasn't made for anything slower than 400 Mhz (this is a 350 G3). Installed it anyway and found that the installer installed 1.1.1. But this time it said it was created 7-28-02 but modified but modified 7-20-04 (today). Long and short was that when I opened it there were all my old photos. So...for all those who took this little problem to heart: it is possible to have a damaged application that malfunctions for one user but not another. Go figger. Thanks to all and rest well.
