| Do I have a G3, G4, or a G3 w/ a G4 processor? Greetings all... Recently just acquired my first Mac. From the looks of it, it seems to be a G3; Its in the "blue&white" casing, hockey-puck mouse and matching keyboard. Looks exactly like it does from photos of a G3 except for the fact that my box does not have the giant "G3" on the side of the machine. Just the Apple logo. In System Profile my hardware specs read as the following; Machine Model: Power Mac G3 (PCI graphics) CPU type: PowerPC G4 (2.2) Number of CPU's: 1 CPU Speed: 450 MHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB Memory: 256 MB Bus Speed: 100 MHz Boot ROM Version: 152 Again, I have no way of telling if this was an original G3 but upgraded to a G4, but by the looks of the insides, it dosent seem to house an upgrade card or anything like that. Looks stock. So by these specs can you determine if I have a G3 processor or a G4? I would like to upgrade but unsure if it already has been upgraded to a G4. Blessings, JT |

I just ordered a stick of 256 MB for more memory, but what about the processor? Could I just get a better G4 processor, or would I need to get an upgrade kit like the Sonnet Encore? JT |

You take out the processor that's in there, and insert a new one. Sonnet makes them, you can also get them from macsales.com. The more expensive ones tend to be easier to install. Just make sure you read the installation notes carefully. If you foul things up too much, you may need to re-install the original CPU to get going again, which it sounds like would not be possible for you. IMHO, I'd leave it alone. Stuff it with RAM, but leave the processor be. The really fast CPU upgrades will cost you a couple hundred dollars less than a new eMac, but won't get you the performance. Jeff K |

I checked out some websites on mac upgrades. They are pretty expensive given that it would only increase proformance say 20-30%. I pulled another stick of RAM out of my old Pentium III box sitting in my closet. I now am running my G3/G4 Mac w/ 512 MB RAM. No proformance gains at all, BUT things are moving a bit more "smoothly". I will consider this then end lifecycle for this Mac. Until HD DVD/TV becomes more mainstream, Ill continue to use this Mac... Joe > > Jeff K |

That 450 should do you fine for now, so it'd be mainly informational. If you get OS X, a faster proc wouldn't be too bad: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G3CARDS/G...iew/index.html |

| Re: Do I have a G3, G4, or a G3 w/ a G4 processor? When the G4 processors first became available, Apple was not ready with a totally redesigned mother board for the G4 chip. Instead they took the existing G3 board (in the blue and white case) and reworked it a bit to accomodate the G4 processor. I believe you have one of these. Later they came out with a redesigned motherboard specifically for the G4 and I believe the speeds then started at 500 MHz and up. Looks stock. It should. The upgrade would be non-obvious, visually, since the CPU card for the G4 looks pretty much the same as the G3. And a heatsink hides much of it. > > So by these specs can you determine if I have a G3 processor or a G4? I > > would like to upgrade but unsure if it already has been upgraded to a G4. You provided your own answer above in the System Profile listing: > > Machine Model: Power Mac G3 (PCI graphics) > > CPU type: PowerPC G4 (2.2) > > Number of CPU's: 1 > > CPU Speed: 450 MHz Looks like a B&W G3 with a CPU upgrade. > When the G4 processors first became available, Apple was not ready with > a totally redesigned mother board for the G4 chip. > > Instead they took the existing G3 board (in the blue and white case) and > reworked it a bit to accomodate the G4 processor. I believe you have > one of these. Probably not. Almost certainly not. The first G4 ("Yikes") systems used modified Yosemite motherboards, and they show up in System Profiler as "Power Mac G4 (PCI graphics)". And they used the gray version of the system case. > Later they came out with a redesigned motherboard specifically for the > G4 and I believe the speeds then started at 500 MHz and up. The G4 (PCI graphics) and G4 (AGP graphics) systems were released at the same time, September of 1999. > and I believe the speeds then started at 500 MHz and up. They shipped systems at 350MHz and 400MHz. The first 500MHz systems didn't ship until July of 2000 (thanks to Motorola) when the G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) PowerMac was introduced.
