Over the years we ran iMacs, G3s, PowerMacs, you name it. We had a policy of never shutting them off for the reasons you cited, and in the seven years I was there I never had a hardware failure. One PowerMac ran the whole seven years like that. For all I know, it's still running. |

OSX expects you to leave the computer on all the time and schedules unix maintenance tasks for late at night, so it won't interfere with you using the computer. If you get automatic backup software, it will benefit by backing up in the middle of the night. You should set the Energy Saver panel to let the monitor sleep. That will prevent the monitor from wearing out before necessary. And it will wake up quickly enough. -- Walt Sellers Computer Engineer For Hire www.VirtualOutpost.com ws_usenet@virtualoutpost.com - include the keyPhrase "WhoYaGonnaCall?" in the body or subject of the message to get past the spam filters. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= In theory there is no difference between practice and theory, but in practice there is. -unknown =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= |

Turning it on in the morning and off at night is very much OK. It's turning it on, using for 15 minutes, shutting down, coming back an hour later, etc., that's really bad. Just set the energy saver to go to sleep and leave it on. -- Brian Ehni |
