| Blue and White G3 startup problems I have a Blue and White G3 I bought this past Friday, and it will not boot as it should. It has: 256 MB RAM 12GB HD (Set to master) OS 9.2 24xCD-ROM Internal ZIP 100 drive ATI Rage128 16MB video card 350 MHz G3 processor I added a Western Digital Caviar 331000 (Set to slave) which caused the screen to go black, and now only the drives initialize when the computer is turned on; there is no audio or video. The video card is unaffected; it works in my Power Mac 8500. I tried everything I could think of: Changed the DIMMs around Reset the CUDA Switched drives around Tried different drives Tried different PRAM batteries Tried video card in other PCI slots I am unsure if the motherboard is the Revision 1 or Revision 2, since the print is too small for me to see clearly. Any help is appreciated. |

Any help is appreciated. on the B+W I believe the drives are auto sensing so you don't have to set them for master slave. This was the case for my wife's B+W. I installed a 120MB maxtor drive with no problems. I just put a jumper on autosense or I left it out. What ever the manufaturer said to do. |

Any help is appreciated. Were you able to mount the second drive above the first drive in a U shaped bracket? If so, then it is a Rev 2 model. If there was no U shaped bracket for mounting the drives, it is a Rev 1. If it's a Rev 1, it's not surprising that your set up isn't working. The Rev 1s are known to be particular about the hard disk(s) installed. There is a known problem with the ATA controller. Certainly installing a second hard drive in a Rev 1 is asking for problems. I'm not quite a certain about installing a master drive other than what originally came with the machine. You would be well served to buy a PCI based ATA controller card for a Rev 1 B&W. I have also had problems getting OS 9.2.x to boot my Rev 1 B&W. OS 9.2.2 works fine for Classic mode but really freezes the machine trying to boot to it. I use OS 9.1 for booting into OS 9. -- Matt Broughton Only relatives are absolute. |

Then my G3 is Revision 1, because the hard drives mount side by side, and the CD ROM is above the ZIP drive. > If it's a Rev 1, it's not surprising that your set up isn't working. > The Rev 1s are known to be particular about the hard disk(s) installed. > There is a known problem with the ATA controller. Thanks for the info so far, folks. |
