Audio on g5 powermac

Hi there,

I'm thinking about buying a g5 powermac dual. I know that it comes
with digital audio inputs, but I'm wondering can I record from these
(and the regular analogue ones) by using the command line? I have an
old sgi 02 that I am replacing and it had lots of cool command line
stuff (sfrecord) that meant you could have full access to the hardware
with scripts etc.

I'm have no preference about using MacOS or Linux (YellowDog) and
would also like whap in a video tuner (digital) in as well. Anybody
"been there, done that?"

Thanks in advance,

Pete.
