DESPERATE PLEA FOR HELP: Printing to Stylewriter 1500 in OS X

G'day all,

I want to migrate my iMac from OS 9.2.2 to OS X 10.3.2 ... the only thing
stopping me is my darling wife, and her affinity to the 'classic' way of
doing things ...

I'm nearly there - the only hold back is the fact she can't print to her
beloved Stylewriter 1500!

Although we have a USB printer, she percieves that it's cheaper and more
economical (I think I have to agree - anecdotally, it seems that there are
more pages between changing cartridges, and the cartridges are cheaper ...
plus the HP PSC 1210 doesn't print in OS 9 in grey scale).

It's connected to a router via an Apple StyleWriter Ethernet Adapter (very
handy, as we have multiple macs on the network).

I've found some clues and bits, but I need an OS X/*nix guru to help put
it all together ... please! If I can get this happening - I can finally
get her to move the iMac into 2004!

I've found the driver, and linux based instructions:

http://homepage.mac.com/monroe/styl/
http://www.mcgillis.org/~matthew/printing.html
http://www.mosx.net/dossiers/sw4osx.shtml (in French)
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...yleWriter_1500

But I haven't been able to get it to work.

These are my percieved problems:

1) Installation is tricky - I've tried to follow all the steps, but my
unfamilarity with *nix and the translation of these directions to OS X
make me a bit unsure that all is in it's right place ... I found GS
(GhostScript) in bizarre locations with bizarre permissions.

2) Recompiling the driver for appletalk - this is something I had trouble
with in particular, as the documentation for *nix talks aboyt netatalk,
and I'm pretty sure appletalk is built into OS X using different command
set/structure.

3) I'm stupid.

I know I can print to PDF, open the PDF in a 'classic' version of Acrobat,
and print from there, but the process is too convoluted and slow.

Please - if you have the power - help me help her and my family get into X ...

Mikey Mike

BTW: My apologies for multiple postings in some newsgroups - dunno what
happened after hitting bizzare key combo ... won't happen again ...

Mmmm... luck guy, wish I could've met her b4 u. We could've been Luddites
together ;).

Get another Mac. One for you, one for her.... [it clearly is taking longer
for some to "bite the bullet"] - Or maybe an "ancient" Mac, one with ports
that can connect directly to the SW 1500 and can act primarily as a print
server to the SW.

Sorry, I've heard of difficulties with OSX printing to "classic" printers,
but no practical tech solution to offer.... :(

Do you have a USB serial port adapter (e.g. Keyspan)? If so you should
be able to print in Classic mode.

If I could afford another Mac - I'd buy one ... or another network
printer. But things are tight, and I'm trying to make do with wha I've
got.

There isn't one :( I tried to find something to make a SW 1500 print
from OS X, and never had any luck. Someone has a SW II printing from OS
X at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...30530110330235, but
it's not really what you seem to be after...

Letīs start here:

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...yleWriter_1500

Looks hopeful, now follow the various links on the page -it looks as though
you may get it working using the raw CUPS printing system (hold down
option?) in the Print Centre or go to http://localhost:631 on the box
connected to the printer

I fairly recently picked up an old PowerMac 7300 for $75, which would be
great as a print server to the StyleWriter. Not wanting to sell it or
anything, just aluding to the fact that there are some great old Mac boxes
out there, which can be had for very few $$$, and can still have a
useful purpose.

The only thing that may get you up and running on X is a "GIMP-Print/CUPs"
solution.
<http://www.stargeek.com/item/3571.html> for info
<http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15970> for DL
<http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3> Supported
<http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_FAQ_OS_X.php3> Gimp-Print FAQ

The SW 1500 isn't supported or reported to work with Gimp-Print, so far,
BTW. But there are some close model versions that do, so...

Good luck.

Another way is to get an Ethernet to Appletalk Box (AsantePrint) Contact
me off list for more details.

I'd suggest buying a small Canon USB printer. Similar lack of heavy
costs in printing. HP's are awfully expensive to run. Better still,
get a 4-cartridge Canon. They are as cheap to run (in black and white)
as a cheap laser printer.

You can actually have it both ways! Once you upgrade the iMac (assuming it
can handle OS X in the first place; you need enough RAM and processor speed
to do it) you can utilize the classic/os 9 apps and print from classic to
your classic printer. Easy. Now make the switch already! :)

Kind Regards,
