| Is Norton Utilities useful/safe for Panther yet? I've relied on Norton Utilities for OS9 for years; now I'm running Panther, and I've read that the 8.0 version of Norton Utilities can cause more problems than it fixes. The website claims that 8.0.2 is good for Panther. What do people think? Is it? I currently have TechTool Pro and DiskWarrior. Does Norton provide anything those two don't cover? -- Mike Levin mlevin77@comcast.net |

I was also a big Norton fan in the pre-X days. SInce then, their total disregard for Mac users has caused me to go TechTool. Also Disk Warrior No regrets. H. |

Why bother periodically checking one's file system, or why bother with Norton if one has TechTool and DiskWarrior? If you meant the former, there's not much to talk about... If you meant the latter, then that's exactly the question I'm asking: is there any reason to use Norton in addition to the other two? Mike |

NU has a long history of being extremely fragile. It will be only a few months before another NU bug starts trashing disks and the upgrade won't be free. Forget it. |

Last time I installed Norton on an early version of OSX, and dutifully registered by e-mail, I didn't spot the small print on one of the pages which said I might be added to their mailing list. Several dozen spams per day later, (including one which was carrying a trojan which resulted in several hundred _per day_ and up to a thousand shortly after), I had to change my e-mail address. Bastards. Never, ever, again will I use Norton Utilities. Kind regards, Devi |

| Re: Is Norton Utilities useful/safe for Panther yet? Stop - please stop - don't use Norton in OS X! Norton for OSX is evil. Use Disk Warrior and the Apple Disk Utility. That's all most will need. I also have TechTool Deluxe but have not found it that useful yet. Norton was great in OS9 and earlier but it's bogus for OS X. I can't think of any OS where it didn't get confused by large directories, complicated resource forks, non-English filenames, highly fragmented extents, large files, etc., etc. Light duty computer users could get it running OK but power users would have their hard drive trashed. Wasn't Disk Light a Norton product? That was notorious for trashing hard drives and crashing the OS back in the MC68030 days. It was installed by default, of course. > > > Michael Levin wrote: > > > I've relied on Norton Utilities for OS9 for years; now I'm running Panther, > > and I've read that the 8.0 version of Norton Utilities can cause more > > problems than it fixes. While I would never trust Norton with a working drive, if I had an up-to-date version I would definitely use it after all the other tools I have declare a drive lost. If I was administering, say, a hundred Macs I'd probably buy a copy. When all else fails, it's at least more effective than throwing your hard drive out a window and hoping it fixes itself on landing. -- Steven Fisher; sdfisher@spamcop.net "Morituri Nolumus Mori." |
