Remote login to start a user session

I need to know if the following is possible:

1. ssh as root to a geographically remote machine for running
softwareupdate
2. reboot the machine when updates are complete
3. *remotely* login as user, as if that user had logged in from the
login window

I can handle #s 1 and 2 ;) Its #3 that's got me stumped.

You see, I need to have the dock/desktop etc. up for that user, once
its been updated. Then, the screen saver can protect access to the
desktop.

For (annoying) security/policy reasons, i cannot set the
"Automatically Log In As" option. So the login has to be done
remotely.

Any ideas?

I'm curious about why #3 should be necessary.

If the user knows his password (to deactivate the screen saver), then
he should know how to log-in.

The disturbance caused by this should be far less than the
disturbance of having the system rebooted.

If it was my system, I'd just leave the machine logged out. But I
don't know the reason for your requirement.

Re: Remote login to start a user session

Well,

I would like to run OSX VNC on the remote machine so that I can change
settings, update software, etc.

For example, the quicktime software updates require you to click
"Proceed" on the screen before it will complete, so the CLI
softwareupdate is not useful.

Once a machine is rebooted, it is sitting at the login window, and I
need to get it to login as a user before I can ssh as that user to run
OSX VNC.

Again, I can't just set it to auto login, so I need a way to remotely
log-in as a user in the GUI from the login window.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,
Can't you set up OSX VNC server to start at startup?
I'm sure there's an option that lets you install it as a system startup item.

Yes, but that happens AFTER you login as a user. I don't see OSX VNC
coming up at boot, to show me the initial login screen. Remember, I
can't set the machine to atuo-login as a user due to the remote site's
security policy.

How do you set OSX VNC to run before any users have logged on?

Thanks,

You can use a startup bundle to run a terminal script on startup. A
sudo command in the script can set the user.
