| iBook Mac OS X TCP/IP Discrepencies When configured using DHCP, two iBooks tested do not receive DNS Servers from a router. When DNS the server addresses are entered into the DNS field for that network configuration, the terminal and browser both do not resolve hostnames (maybe in DHCP mode, manually entered DNS servers are not used by the OS, even though the field is editable), BUT when all details (ie. I.P, subnet, router, DNS servers) are set manually, hostnames are resolved. The problem as you can guess here is that these iBooks with static IP's could cause conflicts on a DHCP network. Must I accept this side-effect or can someone help me, thanks? One has panther and the other is v10.2. |

From my experience os x has not problem with dhcp servers offering dns servers and others. A powerbook and a g4 have been using this setup for quite some time now, inlcude versions 10.1, 10.2 and now 10.3. Any errors in the console log? >One has panther and the other is v10.2. > > |

Are the iBooks on the same physical subnet as these PCs? If they are on their own leg of the network, they may not be getting DHCP messages. Are they getting valid IP addresses? Or are they self-assigned? > > > > > > From my experience os x has not problem with dhcp servers offering dns > > servers and others. > > A powerbook and a g4 have been using this setup for quite some time now, > > inlcude versions 10.1, 10.2 and now 10.3. > > > > > > Any errors in the console log? > > Please where is the iBook console log and what does it log by default? The "Console" application is located in /Applications/Utilties It displays the contents of various system and application logs. Click "logs" in the toolbar for a sidebar of selectable logs. DHCP errors might be in system.log (mine shows one) > > > > > >One has panther and the other is v10.2. > > > > > > -- Walt Sellers Computer Engineer For Hire www.VirtualOutpost.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Meddle not in the affairs of dragons; for thou art crunchy and good with ketchup. -unknown =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= |
