| connecting a mac to a pc I have a friend with a Pentium 3 and he needs to back up his data. He doesn't have a CD burner and doesn't want to buy one either. I have a CD burner on my G3 and I was going to try and back up his data for him. Is there anyway to transfer the data with an Ethernet cable? I don't know if this is a stupid question but it would be really nice if I could just plug his pentium 3 into my G3 and simply transfer the data over. Neither one of us has a router so I can't network them that way. Any suggestions? I have an external Zip drive and it looks like thats the only way I'll be able to transfer the stuff. I'm sure it will be a lot of fun to transfer everything in 100MB chunks. |

If you're running OS-X, then a simple crossover cable between the two machines, set the TCP/IP to manual and set the IP's the same subnet and you should be in business. If you're running OS9 or 8, and you don't have PCMacLan or Dave, then it'll be the zip drive... |

(2) If you enable Windows file sharing on your machine then with the proper magic on his box (not real good at Windows) his machine will be able to see your disk drive. Then he can copy his stuff over and you can burn it. He should be able to read your CD's. Also when you copy the files you might also use the option if you have 10.3 of Archiving them which ZIP's them and the PC can easily handle ZIP files. --jim |
