Processor hog?

What exactly is a processor hog and what does it do to your machine? I
recently purchased fruit menu and then somebody wrote somewhere that fruit
menu is a processor hog, I was confused since Fruit menu isn't usually being
used except when I pull down the apple menu, is it hogging the processor
just being there?

Re: Processor hog?

no

just open terminal and type in 'top -u' (no quotes)
this will show you a list of all processes running in use (amount of
cpu) order from largest to smallest.

Hi!

A "processor hog" is an application that won't relinquish control of the
system CPU in a way that is fair to other applications in a multitasking
system. On cooperative systems this can lead to a total loss of control. On
preemptive systems the same can happen but is less likely as the OS only
doles out a certain amount of CPU time each application and therefore can
usually maintain better control of the system. In the latter case
performance of other programs is more likely to suffer as opposed to a total
system crash.

It may or it may not. Use a process viewer utility to find out. Some
programs are ill behaved when idle as they do things like poll the keyboard,
mouse or other I/O devices to check for a trigger event.

Thanks for your help William. What would make your computer sluggish, would
it be lack of ram or a program that's hogging to much of the processor.
After using the process viewer I see that "net monitor" a little shareware
program I have that monitors my internet connection is always at the top of
CPU usage, since this program is really not something I use much would
quitting it cause me to see any performance change?
