Moving files fm old iMac to new eMac

Greetings,

I'm looking at purchasing a new eMac - after a few years of lagging
behind with an older iMac running 9.2

I'm concerned about the best way to retrieve my files from my 9.2 iMac
and copy them onto my new eMac with Panther.

Will this be a matter of simply connecting up my old machines' HD to
my new eMac through USB and snagging what I want or will it be more
difficult?

Thanks in advance!

Your old Mac has a firewire port, I believe... it may be possible to
connect it to the new one using a firewire cable, and boot the eMac in
Firewire Target disk mode by holding down the T key while booting...
this makes it appear on the desktop of the new system as a Firewire
disk-- making it easy to transfer files.

See: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...20401233536141

Alternatively, setting up a quick and dirty little peer-to-peer network,
connecting them with an ethernet cable, should also do the trick.

Perfect! I was hoping to hear some advice like this - I thank you
very much for the quick response and this sounds like it won't be that
bad Alan.

It (my old iMac) indeed does have a firewire port!

Have a great day!

Make sure the cable isn't just any old ethernet cable but a "bridge
connector" ethernet cable. The usual ethernet cable is for connecting your
computer to a hub or server, the bridge cable means you don't need a hub to
connect the two computers.

Kind Regards,
Nathaniel

Nathaniel I really appreciate it - this is great info to know - exactly
what I need to know!

What Nathaniel is suggesting MAY be the case-- it's also referred to as
a 'crossover cable'... but many recent Mac models will let you connect
the two with any standard ethernet cable. I'm not sure when this became
a feature of Mac systems, so can't say off-hand whether it will work for
you or not.

So to summarize, if you are connecting the two Mac's via ethernet:

1) You can connect the two computers' Ethernet ports directly using a
crossover cable. This is guaranteed to work.

2) You can try connecting the two ports directly using a standard
Ethernet cable. This MAY work, depending on the Mac models.

3) You can connect each computer to an Ethernet hub, switch, or router,
using standard cables. This will work.

So from what you're saying Alan is I may need to experiment a bit -
"your results may vary" "Crossover cable" is what I shall put on my
list of things to buy when I put in my order.

Thanks once again for the excellent advice!

You have a point, however this person said he has an older iMac which I
don't think will allow just the ordinary ethernet cable connection without a
hub or a crossover cable. (I keep forgetting that name, so thanks for
correcting me.)

Nathaniel

Except it was already determined that the OP could use the better
option, i.e. firewire, to do his transfer.

ERic,

Noooo. Use firewire, not ethernet. Don't know why these guys got on this
ethernet kick with the crossover cable and such.

Firewire....

Target mode....

no ethernet.

Your emac will work with a straight ethernet cable, you only need one
computer that will sense this for it to work. I have my emac connected
to a PM6500 OS9.1 with such a config.

I had some problems with appletalk crashing both machines so you may
want to connect the two using tcp.
