Saving files fm iMac to new eMac?

Greetings,

I'm looking at purchasing a new eMac - after a few years of lagging
behind with an older iMac running 9.2

I'm concerned about the best way to retrieve my files from my 9.2 iMac
and copy them onto my new eMac with Panther.

Will this be a matter of simply connecting up my old machines' HD to
my new eMac through USB and snagging what I want or will it be more
difficult?

Thanks in advance!

Different, not difficult.

If your iMac has FW, I'd suggest using Target Disk Mode -- it's
lightning fast.

If not, simply connect the two machines via Ethernet and transfer the
files you want that way.

That was my first thought too, but I'm not sure 9.2 will boot to target
disk. X will, of course, but ...

Well I guess there's nothing to lose. Start up the new machine, hook new
and old via firewire, start up old iMac holding down the T. You'll know
pretty quickly if you have a proper target boot because the iMac screen
will look completely different and it's HD will show up on the eMac
desktop (if you're logged in, of course).

The OS doesn't make target disk mode happen, the firmware does. So it
all depends on how recent the Mac is. (The OS never starts booting.)

I've used firewire to transfer things many time and prefer it over any
kind of file sharing via any network I'm likely to have.

By now, Eric has transferred his files. How did it go Eric?
