Mac Won't Do Chat?

Greetings, all.

I'm working on a research project and I need to get into some online
chat rooms- yahoo, msn, that sort of thing.

For some reason, the chat applets don't work on either of my macs (G4
laptop 10.2.8 and G5 10.3.3) using the latest versions of either Safari,
Explorer, or Netscape.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and, if so, do you know of a
solution?

I'm thinking of just buying virtual PC and getting into chat via a PC
version of Explorer. Any thoughts on whether this might work or not?

Thanks so much!

The Yahoo! chat rooms work alright in for me using Safari and 10.3.3.
Have you downlaoded the latest version of Java?

Have you tried booting into 9.X and using IE?

There are two programs I know of for Yahoo! chat on the Mac.

The first is ChitChat: <http://chit.sourceforge.net/> I don't know its
the status is.

The second is my program, Charla. Get it at
<http://homepage.mac.com/gershwin/temp/Charla2.tar.gz>, since the
version linked from my home page is broken. In the connect dialog, make
sure to choose a working server, since the default one is never up.
cs37.msg.dcn.yahoo.com works for me.

I'm on the lower end, OS 9.2.2 running IE 5, but I get in to Yahoo web-based
chat rooms just fine. Can't in NS 7 because there is some conflict with the
way some sites are programmed and they won't recognize that I have cookies
tuened on in NS. I don't do the client thing except plain old IM since I
really don't like chat that much.

Might seem silly, but check you browser prefs to make sure Java is enabled
and you're accepting cookies. Passed that, it may be a system extension or
library problem.

Sorry, not much help,
inez

Where would I get that? Wouldn't it be part of the regular software
updates I run on the system regularly?

I'd rather not use 9.

Thanks! :)

Hi, Peter. Your software seems to work wonderfully! I do have a
question, however.

Is it possible to view profiles from your software?

use sherlock, or sherlock 2 depending on your system version to look
(freeway symbol- f) for Java Runtime Enabler to properly load Java applets
in chatrooms.

viewing profiles (yahoo, etc) are easy with any image browser (IE, NS,
HotJava)

also, check your preferences (as earlier suggested) to ensure you have Java
enabled, and check to see if your pages will load in a new window as opp. to
"tabbed" browsing some ppl. prefer (tab setting wont allow profiles to be
viewed)

Peter:

Just wanted to let you know that I've been using Charla now for a few
weeks and it's marvelous.

Thank you thank you thank you.

Is it possible to get on some sort of list so I'm notified of any
updates?

I gave up on chatrooms years ago using a Mac. They never work.
About the only one that ever did work was when I first got on the web in
the early 90's and used AOL.
