| ejecting DVD from g4 Hello all, I'd appreciate any advice on this one - I was testing out a dvd in my g4 mac when the mac froze. After waiting a while, I pressed the little reset button, It restarted, (slowly) but no icons came up on the screen, although the mouse pointer could move freely. So I turned it off. So is there a key I can hold down during start up to eject the disk? Any advice would be great, as 'my' g4 isn't actually mine - I just use it for 8 hours at work everyday... So I really need some ideas before monday! Thanks, Mhari |

As on ALL macs there is a small circular hole near the drawer - about the size of a straightened paper clip. Insert said paperclip into the hole and push gently - the drawer will unlock and manually open. You should then be able to insert the Mac OS software CD and reboot while holding down the C key. Jim |

Try booting with the mouse button or the keyboard-eject button held down first. This should cause the firmware to eject the media before the boot sequence stats. > You should then be able to insert the Mac OS software CD and reboot > while holding down the C key. Assuming you want to reinstall the system software afterwards. -- David |

Just because you booted from the CD doesn't mean you have to reinstall the system software! Just like you have to boot from the Norton Utilities CD if you want to run disk doctor. Jim |

| Re: ejecting DVD from g4 After you are booted up on the CD you will have to go to the menu bar and pick utilities,do the repair then when you restart you need to hold down the option key, highlight your Hard drive then click on return. So I really need some ideas before > monday! If holding down the mouse button during restart doesn't work -- as happens all too frequently -- you will need to boot into Open Firmware and type in an "eject cd" command. More detailed instructions are available at <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106752>. After ejecting the disc, your next move is to attempt repair of the startup volume using the DiskWarrior CD. |

| Re: ejecting DVD from g4 Everyone, thank you so much for your help! Guess what? It restarted all by itself on monday. If only every problem worked itself out so easily.. Mhari > > I'd appreciate any advice on this one - I was testing out a dvd in my > > g4 mac when the mac froze. |

Or from any drive other than the one you want to repair. Zip disks. extra hard drive partitions, ipods, and other devices also work just fine. Some utilities (like Tech Tool) even include a facility for booting from a disk image on your main hard drive partition for doing this. But it's all irrelevant to the OP's question. Why do you think he would have to repair the hard drive because one optical disc doesn't seem to want to eject? -- David |

The guy at the Apple Store said my optical-drive problem could be a corrupt HD... until I told him I'd used TechTool to zero the drive. |
