| Possible to move OSX prefs and setup from G4 to G5? I recently moved to OS X (Panther) on a PowerBook laptop, and spent a considerable amount of time tweaking the preferences, and adjusting all the behaviors of the system to suit my tastes. I am now getting a G5 at work; am I correct in thinking that the G5 can't be booted from a clone of the G4 OS X volume? It will need it's own personal OS X install, right? If so, is there any way to move all the prefs and other personalizations from the G4 to the G5, or do I have to try to remember what I did and do everything again by hand? -- Mike Levin mlevin77@comcast.net |

You can probably firewire-target-mode them together and copy your home folder from the laptop. m-m |

Or don't see it; the idea is simple enough to repeat: I am suggesting you parition your new G-5, use Carbon Copy Cloner to bring over your entire G-4 structure, and yes, there's a chance it won't work right as a boot drive, but the other step is to immediately (clean- as there's nothing there) install osX on the second partition. If you have a DotMac account go get the free app"Backup" and use it. Not sure what the deal is if you don't have an Apple account. I just put a 40GB HD in my G4 Sawtooth and had to swith an entire HD's apps and it's prefs to the new HD. Backup worked great! Saved me a full day of headaches. And was **** easy to do. |

That is, 1) is everything stored in my home folder (not in some system directory elsewhere in the file structure), and 2) will the OS X for the G5 accept the G4 OSX's prefs (and other) files? Will my home directory and all the invisible stuff in it work correctly on the G5? How different is the OS X which ships with the G5 from Panther on a G4, anyway? Apps which run on my G4 should run on the G5, yes? -- Mike Levin mlevin77@comcast.net |

I would try it out first by creating a new account on the G5 and renaming the copy of the G4 home directory to the same as the one you just created. Then replace the home folder the G5 and login as that user. I've done it that way between G4's. m-m |

The answer could well be yes to the above, and some folks have probably done it, but have not posted on this thread. If you do the partioning, and then do as I have suggested with CCC, you'll know. If it doesn't work, you'll have all your Home folder on the new machine anyway. John McWilliams |

Initial install was to a G3 Lombard. Then G4 Sawtooth>iBook>Lime iMac>eMac>G4 Powerbook>iBook. All was always well. Not to mention all the times I've screwed up something (I am very good at that) and have had to resstore from one backup or another. M-M suggested just your users folder. If you have a ton of software you've added, cloning is much easier than reinstalling. -- |

I use it to boot any firewire equipped machine we have. Having said all this, I must note I have never had the pleasure of messing with a G5. -- |

I have a family Mac with MacOS 9.2.2 and OSX 10.2.6 and would like to migrate but still preserve all users' settings, including userIDs and the like, to a new machine eventually. The immediate problem for me is how to migrate everything to a larger disk drive for the same machine. OSX-specific software seems to have bloated tremendously from their OS9-and-earlier versions.
