Wireless on older Macs?

Does anyone make wireless network adaptors (PCI or PCMCIA) with
OS9 (or even X) drivers??? Arrrrgh - it doesn't seem so...

The 16-bit PCMCIA Lucent/Orinoco cards will work with OS9,OS8, and even
7.6.1 on powerbooks as old as the 5300. Verified. There are reports of
being able to use 7.5.5, but I haven't verified that.

You can use these cards in any PCI equipped PowerMac, as well, by using
a generic PCI-PCMCIA bridge card, and plugging the card in. This is, in
fact, what the airport adapter is in iMacs and desktops.

For older Powermacs with no PCI slot (NuBus or PDS only), use an
external ethernet->wireless bridge (for example, on a Powermac 6100, you
could use System 7, an AAUI->10bT adapter, a short cable to a 10bT
wireless bridge device, and it will work flawlessly.

Finally, for MacOS machines (powerbook or desktop) with OS9 and USB, a
good number of the USB wireless adapters have MacOS drivers.

In short, your options for wireless networking on older macs are much
more plentiful than you might think!

lycka till!

If your mac has an ethernet port then you should be able to use an ethernet
WAP or a bridge to form or join a wireless network.

However, there may be a problem sending Appletalk packets across a WAP or
bridge; I'm not sure because I'm running TCP/IP on my network. Of course,
even my SE/30 can run TCP/IP under system 7.5.3.

You might check this page for more 802.11 on OS 9- info:
http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

I wasn't able to get the Orinoco card working with my Powerbook 1400
with anything earlier than OS 8.1, but there are reports of it working.
With 8.1, it was no problem at all.

And Appletalk works well over wireless.
