Disappearing submenu

My iMac has suddenly stopped showing a submenu for Recent Applications
(under the Apple menu, system 8.6) although opening the Recent
Applications window does show the aliases for the apps.

Submenus for other items are working fine.

How do I fix this?

Thanks for your help with this fairly basic question.
