installed OS9.1 now no firewire

I have an iMac DV Spec. Ed. 128mb 13.6HD that I recently upgraded from
OS9 to 9.1. The install went smoothly and most of my old apps are OK.
However now I can't get the iMac to see my firewire burner or digital
camcorder, also firewire. With both or either plugged in there is no
indication in the profiler they are present. I have done all the extension
checking and reinstall of the burner software but I still am firewire-less.
Any and all input would really be appreciated.

TIA

Leo May

You might want to check with the manufacturer of the "offending" drive. They
may have updated drivers that will enable you to use them again on your 9.1
computer. Many firewire and cdr drives have firmware updates that allow them
to operate on certain operating systems.

Are you saying you upgraded from 9.1 to OS X? If so there are documented
problems with Firewire 800 drives and OS X.

Nathaniel

Re: installed OS9.1 now no firewire

I upgraded from OS9.0 to 9.1. I've installed the latest firewire extensions,
upgraded firmware, unplugged, replugged, uninstalled burner software,
reinstalled, uninstalled iMovie1 software, reinstalled with iMovie 2,
checked and unchecked firewire extensions ad infinitum. Am about to revert
to OS9 to see if that restores firewire; but man, would I like to find
something that works before doing all that. Didn't go to OSX, I can't think
of anything I did except install the OS9.1 to cause me to lose the FW. I
can't blame the burner software because the computer doesn't 'see' my Canon
digital camcorder either.

The other option you might think about is that your firewire port has a
problem and maybe, if it's a PCI card, it needs to be replaced. It's
happened to me this way before. Have you tried rebooting with your firewire
still plugged into your computer? Make sure it's still on, and your computer
will have the best chance to "see" it.

So are you using the firewire drive to create and/or store movies?

Re: installed OS9.1 now no firewire

Thanks Nathaniel for your input. I finally figured it out and it's bizarre.
I did a [ APPLE OS 9.1 ALL] with Extension manager to turn off the non Apple
extensions to see if one of them was causing the problem. When I booted with
the Apple only exts. on, my firewire connection appeared in the profiler,
and the burner and camcorder worked.

I isolated the offending extension by process of elimination and it turned
out to be the HP Scanjet ext. Why that ext. affected the firewire connection
I can't even guess. Maybe you would know. When I upgraded from 9.0 to 9.1
the scanner ext. apparently didn't want to work with 9.1 and somehow
interfered with the firewire connection. (?) Tomorrow I will go to the HP
site and download 9.1 compatible software that I hope will restore the
scanner. This has really been a learning experience for me.

I'm importing home movies to iMovie2 for editing. It utilizes the firewire
connection to my Canon camcorder. Now I can get about the business of
editing some 30 cassettes to eventually burn to DVD.

Thanks again for your input and interest.
