Well, I just want MS-DOS, not all of Windows, and I don't want to
spend a lot of money...

Ask friends. Someone probably has an older PC sitting around in the
garage that they'd give you. (save the $10 fee at the landfill site in
some places.)

Virtual PC comes in a variety of versions, at different price-points,
depending on the bundled OS. (At least it did when it was owned by
Connectix-- it's since been purchased by Microsoft, and this may have
changed).

The cheapest version included no Windows license at all, but included a
bare DOS installation.

You may want to check around eBay (etc) to get an older copy. But you do
want a version that runs natively under OS X!

I have an older PC. I want to get rid of it. I am just keeping it
around so that I can use this one MS-DOS program.

Virtual PC is not Windows, although some versions of it come with
Windows pre-installed. VPC emulates the PC hardware, not software.
You can install whatever OS you want, from MS-DOS to Windows, or OS/2
or Linux, for that matter.

But to answer your original question, no, you can't run an MS-DOS
program directly from OS X.

I haven't looked at recent prices/offerings now that the product is
being made by MS, but when it was a Connectix product they offered a
DOS-only version for $59.

Now that I think about it, MS are unlikely to offer this, aren't they?
Bugger.

Check ebay. The other DOS emulation products I've seen (Blochs) are
nowhere NEAR prime time.

There was a product called RealPC you might also be able to find.
Supposedly quite good DOS emulation, but it was abandoned rather than go
on to OS X.

WARNING: Virtual PC does NOT work on G5 systems! At least, not yet
("any day now", Microsoft promises).

Actually, they've gotten a bit more specific ("Spring.").

Reports from beta testers tell me it's actually quite a bit faster!

That would, for those of you keeping score, be a FIRST from Microsoft --
a new version of a product that runs FASTER than the previous version.

Actually -- and I may lose my Mac Geek stripes over this, but -- the Mac
BU seem to me overall to be doing a good job. I love to bash Gates and
M$ as much as the next guy, but it really does seem to me that the Mac
Unit are as independent as they can be. I mean, there's a verified
report out there that MacBU members have been known to sport "I Don't Do
Windows" t-shirts WHILE AT WORK. Picture *that.*

I just try to think of them as a separate entity -- kind of like Taiwan
is to China. :)

There are Virtual PC software suites by Microsoft. I expect they have a
pretty realistic simulation of Windows 98 / XP and should provide a DOS
command line interface.

Otherwise, there are Open-Source programs for Linux/Unix, e.g. Wine, that
are free and will allow you to run Windows or DOS apps under Linux/Unix.

I've run them briefly on a friend's PowerBook.

Virtual PC is just that - a virtualized PC environment. When you buy
it, it will come with one PC operating system (some variety of
Windows). You can also install most other PC operating systems if you
like (of course, you'll need a floppy drive if your OS needs to
install from floppies.)

I have personally used it with MS-DOS, Win95 and Windows 2000. It
works great for everything except modern games. It does not provide
good support for stuff that uses Direct X video. But if you want to
run high-end PC games, I think everyone will agree that you're best
of using a real PC.

For stuff that doesn't involve high-end video, VPC works great. I've
run the MS Office suite, internet utilities and other stuff without
problem.

It should be noted, however, that emulation, by its very nature, is
slow. If you have a G4 at xMHz, expect it to perform like a PC of
x/2 MHz, which may not be fast enough for you.

Also note that using VPC will require a significant amount of memory
and disk. A real PC running Windows and an office suite needs at
least 256M of RAM and a few gigabytes of disk. An emulated PC will
also need this, in addition to what's required to run MacOS, the VPC
program, and any other apps that may be running at the same time.
