| Anyone able to make Retrospect backup to laptop's DVD drive? I've bought Retrospect 5.1 for my 17" powerbook with DVD-R drive. I want to make a multi DVD-R backup, but when I run Retrospect, it says the drive is unsupported. It then does that "custom setup" thing where it tries to understand how to use a new device. Ok; but, it doesn't seem to work: it says "CD/DVD custom configuration in progress, verifying writing method" but then ejects the blank DVD-R, and says "Please insert disk if necessary". Then it just sits there running the little gears cursor, never asks for the disk back, and never gets anywhere. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? How can Retrospect 5.1 for Mac not be able to use the internal drive?? -- Mike Levin mlevin77@comcast.net |

How can > Retrospect 5.1 for Mac not be able to use the internal drive?? Have you gone to Dantz's site to download the latest updates. Be sure to update both the program and the drivers. I recently helped a friend install Retrospect 5.0 on his 17" PowerBook. Initially, the DVD-R drive didn't show up as a backup device. When we downloaded and installed the latest driver update, it appeared and seems to be working OK. -- David |

I did go to the site, but the updates I see seem to be older than the software I have. I have Retrospect Backup version "5.1.175", and there is a file called 'Retrospect 5.1 driver update" in my Retrospect folder. On the site, I see this: Macintosh Retrospect 5.1 Updates Software Version Updater/Details Date Posted Download 5.1 Driver Update 4.2 2003-11-19 669kb 5.1 Retrospect 5.1.175 Installer 2003-8-8 21.5MB Are any of these later than what I have? How did you know what to update (maybe I'm on the wrong URL??). -- Mike Levin mlevin77@comcast.net |

To find out what version of the dirver you're currently using, launch Retrospect and view the log file (Window->Log off of the menubar in 5.0). When I launch mine, the end of the log shows: Æ Retrospect version 5.0.238 launched at 1/25/2004 22:25 + Retrospect Driver Update, version 3.6.106 Note that the driver version is completely different from the Retrospect version (3.6.106 vs. 5.0.238). I think you can also do a "Get Info" on the "Retrospect 5.1 Driver Update" file from the Finder to get its version number. For version 5.1, the latest driver is 4.2 (4.2.105). Installation is trivial. Download rdu42.sit from Dantz's site and expand it. Go into the "English" folder in the archive (assuming you want the English language version of the driver) and copy the file "Retrospect 5.1 Driver Update" from there into the Retrospect directory (overwriting the file that's already there.) If you think you want to keep the old driver (although I wouldn't bother, since you have no DVD support with the current driver), create a folder and move the original one into it. -- David |

I tried it; in fact, today I was able to find RDU 4.3, which their tech support said would support my internal drive. No luck yet - still won't do it. Someone on their forum said I have to erase the file containing the failed custom setup, but I can't find the file they're pointing me to... -- Mike Levin mlevin77@comcast.net |
